When a law firm sends an appearance attorney into a courtroom on a client's behalf, the stakes are real. A missed appearance can mean a default judgment. An unqualified attorney can create malpractice exposure. An attorney without proper insurance can leave everyone in a difficult position if something goes wrong.
CourtCounsel was built with this responsibility at its center. Here is exactly how we verify every attorney before they can accept a single appearance on the platform.
Step 1: Bar License Verification
Every attorney who applies to CourtCounsel must provide their state bar number and the state where they are licensed. Our team verifies active bar status directly with the relevant state bar within 24 hours of application.
We check for:
- Active license in good standing
- No pending disciplinary proceedings
- The correct licensed jurisdiction matches the courthouse markets the attorney wants to serve
An attorney with a suspended or inactive bar card cannot be approved on CourtCounsel, period. This is a hard gate — there are no exceptions.
Step 2: Malpractice Insurance Confirmation
Active malpractice insurance is a mandatory requirement for every attorney in our network. During onboarding, attorneys upload proof of their current policy including the carrier, policy number, coverage limits, and expiration date.
Malpractice insurance is not optional on CourtCounsel. It protects the attorney, the client, and the integrity of every appearance we facilitate.
We track expiration dates and require renewal documentation before a policy lapses. An attorney whose insurance expires will be automatically paused from receiving new appearance matches until coverage is reinstated and documented.
Step 3: Courthouse Familiarity Declaration
Appearing in court is not just about having a bar card. Knowing how a particular judge runs their courtroom, where to check in, what the local rules are for that courthouse — these things matter. An attorney who has never been inside a courthouse is not the right person for a routine appearance there, even if they are licensed in that state.
During profile setup, every CourtCounsel attorney designates the specific courthouses they are familiar with and comfortable appearing in. Our matching algorithm prioritizes attorneys with declared familiarity with the courthouse where the appearance is needed.
Step 4: Ongoing Monitoring
Verification is not a one-time event. CourtCounsel conducts periodic re-verification of bar status for all active attorneys on the platform. Any disciplinary action reported to a state bar triggers an immediate review.
We also track outcome report quality. Attorneys who consistently submit thorough, timely outcome reports maintain higher platform standing and receive priority matching. Attorneys whose reports are late or incomplete receive warnings and, if the pattern continues, are removed from the network.
What Clients See
When a law firm or AI legal company browses CourtCounsel attorney profiles, they see clear verification badges: Bar Verified, Insured, and the specific courthouses the attorney has declared familiarity with. There is no ambiguity about who you are hiring or whether they are qualified to appear.
